Elected among the seven new wonders of the world in 2007, Chichen Itza is Mexico's most iconic archaeological site. The Pyramid of Kukulcan (El Castillo) is a masterpiece of Mayan engineering: its 365 steps correspond to the days of the year, and during equinoxes the shadow draws a serpent descending the stairs.

The site also includes the largest ball court in Mesoamerica, the Temple of Warriors with its thousand columns, and the sacred cenote of 60 meters in diameter. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza attracts over 2.6 million visitors each year.

OTHER ARCHAEOLOGICAL WONDERS OF MEXICO

Beyond Chichen Itza, Mexico possesses extraordinary archaeological sites. Coba, in the heart of the jungle, houses the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan (42 meters). Tulum offers a unique setting: Mayan ruins overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

Uxmal, less known but equally fascinating, features the Puuc architectural style. And Palenque, in the Chiapas jungle, hides royal tombs discovered only in the 20th century.

NATURAL WONDERS: CENOTES AND CORAL REEF

Mexico also possesses unique natural wonders. The cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula form the largest underground river network on the planet, with over 6,000 interconnected cavities.

The Mesoamerican Reef, running along the coast of Quintana Roo, is the second largest coral reef in the world. It hosts exceptional marine biodiversity: turtles, rays, sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species.
